In a society where pornography is intrinsically associated with sexual immorality, the very act of playing so-called eroge implies certain degree of moral depravity. Consequently, one hardly expects that their moral and ethical standards are put to a test by playing such games. Yet, remarkably, that is exactly what happens with The Scales of Semiramis.
The said Scale is permanently presented on the screen, moving towards either “malita (bad)” or “bonum (good)” end in accordance with the player’s choice throughout the game. Thus, the player is constantly reminded of their own stance within the ethical “scale”.
Choices in the direction of malita (such as skipping the class to have a nap) tend to favour Ami, the self-proclaimed “devil”. However, it soon becomes apparent that, in spite of her manipulative mischiefs, she is indeed neither malicious nor spiteful. On the contrary, she sincerely cares for the “victims” of her mischiefs and shows the grace to put their interests before her own.
On the other, bonum, end of the scale sits Eru, the purported “angel”. Ironically, she is the least likable character of the lot with her overly rigid and myopic legalism. She is a Christian, but her attitude resembles not that of Christ, but of the Pharisees, his vehement opposition. It is perhaps inevitable that the truly tragic and disturbing event should take place on her side of the story, and her redemption, though compelling and beautiful, are tinged with sadness.
The creative duo of this game is highly respected authors of such hits as the Otoboku series and Raggio di Sole Nostalgica. In the Scales, they have ventured in a different direction that probably does not suits all tastes. However, I regard this as their finest product yet. Good storyline, delightful characters, witty and contemporary exchanges all makes the game very enjoyable to play. Above all, they have succeeded in creating one of the most stunningly attractive heroines in the eroge universe: Ami the Devilish Girl.
